Juniper Grenache is a chillable, crunchy red made from Santa Ynez Valley Grenache, juniper berries, bay laurel leaves, black tea, sumac, angelica root, smoked sea salt, and black peppercorns.
Aromatically, Juniper Grenache reminds me of some of the whole cluster grenache wines that we produce. It's lifted and herbal with spice notes from the juniper and bay leaves. On the palate, the core is red fruited from the grenache skins while black tea adds tannin and body, the angelica gives a little bitter bite, and the smoked salt and black peppercorns give it the chef's kiss of seasoning.
Serve in a wine glass on ice. Add a splash of fizzy water to make it a spritz and garnish with an orange slice.
January drinks are basically a non-alcoholic tea made from grapes used in our winemaking process, and a selection of fruits, herbs, roots, barks, and other natural aromatic and botanical ingredients. We roast, smoke, steam, or sous vide the fruit, aromatics, and herbs. The pomace and infusion ingredients are steeped in hot water like a huge cup of tea with herbs and spices, filtered and (sometimes) carbonated. It’s a cross between how breweries add hops to beer, then strain them, and how traditional vermouth or aperitifs are made by macerating ingredients in a base wine.
