2019 Mubbly

Regular price $18.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $49+
/

Mubbly is not the Champagne of Beers, it's the Beer of Champagnes.  We make it in a winery and bottle it in a brewery.  It's a blend of stuff like French Columbard, Chardonnay, and Riesling that we pick at low sugars and then ferment to dryness in stainless steel.  When it's all done, we filter it across the patio of the winery into the brite tank at Third Window who puts the carb on it for us and then packages it up.

The result is an easy-to-drink (like right out of the bottle), easy-on-the wallet sparkling wine.  Just pop off the cap, and smash it.  You're welcome.

Potek 2019 Pinot Noir Rosé

Regular price $34.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $49+
/

We are releasing the most delicious rosé wine that we've ever produced.  It's made from some of the top Pinot Noir vineyards in Sta. Rita Hills including old vines from Sanford & Benedict and Rancho la Viña.

The fruit was harvested early in the season when it is full of bright, high-toned acidity. The juice was pulled from skins right away, with very little maceration, then followed by a long and cool fermentation in old French oak barrels to preserve freshness and aromatics.

This rosé shows flowers, dried herbs, fresh strawberry, and yuzu flavors.  It's energetic and fruit forward on the nose with a dry, mineral finish.

HOFER - Cucamonga Grenache

Hofer Ranch is a special oasis that's about 45 miles to the east of LA. It's a Grenache-planted beach sand, own-rooted, head-trained vineyard that's been farmed organically since it was planted in the 1915. After prohibition, the ranch grew to 900 acres, and it sent fruit across the country in boxcars. All that remains today is 5 acres of sand wedged next to the Ontario airport & a field of industrial warehouses. The wine is punchy (like it looks and tastes like Hawaiian Punch), funky, & has loads of sun-kissed, juicy cherry fruit. Put a chill on it for extra fun.

There is Nault Rieslin really to ferment Cinsault and Riesling together… except that it’s tasty.  We made this wine by filling a tank with un-destemmed whole clusters of Cinsault and Riesling, and then the foot stomping began.  This super fresh glou glou was on skins for 10 days or so before pressing to old French oak barrels.  No additions of yeast or anything else, save for a minimum amount of SO2 at unfiltered bottling. We taste smokey cranberries, grapefruits, and pomegranates in this wine.

Drink Riesling!  There's no need to be scared of it (can you believe some people are?).

You Got This.  It's dry riesling. It's made with fruit from the glorious Santa Barbara Riesling site - Kick On Ranch - in Los Alamos.  We make 8 different passes through our 2 acre block during harvest, hand picking early in the morning and whole-bunch pressing each time.  The juice is fermented long and cold in stainless steel to maximize freshness and pump up those beautiful clean smells.  The wine tastes like you squeezed a lime on a wet quartz crystal after using it to smash up white flowers.  It's super quaffable, and just the slightest bit spritzy from short aging in stainless before bottling.

Our Pale Pink Rosé is meant to be drunk now. Its appearance is a genuine reflection of its light, clear and delicate flavors. The wine has a cool strawberry mint aromas and lemony, tangy, juicy fresh acid. This is the ultimate lunch wine - lightweight and built for soaking up sunshine and company.

Sparkling Shiraz is a treat!

We make this wine by barrel aging a rich, ripe syrah for about 20 months in French oak.  The Syrah is made from some of our favorite ranches around the county, mostly Ballard Canyon.

After aging, the wine is racked to a tank at the brewery next door and force carbonated.  Just prior to bottling, we added a small amount of sugar and yeast.  A secondary fermentation in the bottle took place and the wine was conditioned in the bottle for about 3 months.

The wine is fizzy black, with a magenta mousse.  Aromas of black currants, black berries, chocolate, cherries, and strawberries jump right on out of that glass and tickle the nose.

Head's up!  This is a 500 mL bottle.

Making wine from Sanford & Benedict is a privilege. The fruit for this wine is from the original 1971 own-rooted plantings, the genesis of Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir. This vineyard has been tended from the start with love and care, resulting in vines that produce wines of amazing complexity and striking purity.

2017 was an early, warm vintage with a generous crop, but the wines in general have such a harmony of both crispy fresh acid and generous, juicy fruit.

This is a taught, crunchy pinot that shows its cool climate near the ocean on Santa Rosa Road. This wine has an energy and life that is hard to describe, and even harder to find; it is the result of the confluence of a special site, vine age, and a kind vintage.

Our 2017 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict is energetic, lean and expressively aromatic.  It captures the essence of S&B.  Mid-weight and nicely perfumed, the 2017 S&B is a pretty wine to drink now and over the next few years.

In this vintage we included about one third of the whole cluster fruit in the fermentation because we had beautiful stems at harvest.

We bottled 54 unfined cases of this wine in April 2019 after 18 months in neutral and 2-year-old French Oak.

2017 Hilliard Bruce Chardonnay

Regular price $45.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $49+
/

Hilliard Bruce Vineyard sits to the north of Hwy 246 in what’s just about the center of the Sta. Rita Hills appellation. The certified sustainably farmed ranch is planted to 16 acres of Pinot Noir and 5 acres of Chardonnay. The vineyard is divided into blocks by soil profile, rootstock, and clone. The vines are very densely planted at 2420 vines / acre.

We started working with Hilliard Bruce when Greg Brewer, a respected colleague and friend, took over the farming operation. We’ve been very pleased with the result of the meticulous farming and special site of the vineyard.

Our Chardonnay was produced by hand picking low brix fruit at night, and rushing it straight to our press in the morning. The fruit was pressed whole cluster directly to old French oak. The juice was allowed to begin fermentation on its own with ambient yeasts. The wine was aged in barrel for nine months with lees stirring performed once a month to build texture and increase mouthfeel.

The resulting wine is high energy with precise and vivid acidity resulting from the sandy soils and cool foggy ocean breezes. Aromas of lemon, vanilla, pear, and white pepper are followed with vibrant flavors of lemon zest, mint, and fig.

2016 Tierra Alta Syrah

Regular price $47.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $49+
/

Tierra Alta Vineyard is a dramatically steep site that is full of chalky white limestone. The limestone adds beneficial nutrients to the vines but also holds some moisture in the dryer times and offers good drainage when it rains.

The wide variation between the tops and bottoms of the slopes contribute to the energy in the wine. Richness and power from lean soils at the top of the hill; juiciness, and freshness from the heavier solids at the bottoms. This dynamism also plays out in the micro-climate of the area.

Tierra Alta is perched at the northern end of Ballard Canyon. The fog pushes and pulls against it almost every day during the growing season - filling up the canyon in the morning and emptying out in the evening.  Ballard Canyon has carved a niche among the world’s greatest Syrah producing regions. The Syrahs rest in the middle of the grape’s stylistic range, richly textured, while maintaining vibrancy and freshness.

Tierra Alta has been the backbone of my Syrah program since my start in 2007. Every year I have refined my approach to the different blocks and clones. I’ve tinkered with various percentages of stem inclusion, harvest ripeness and fermentation regime.

The 2016 Tierra Alta Syrah is a wine that is powerful and explosive but always in balance. The nose is an explosion of dark fruit, game, and savory notes. The flavors are classic syrah with dark berry, smoke, iron, olive, black pepper and minty note on the finish. The tannins are present but not overpowering and will integrate over the next few years. This wine will last 10+ years and will be drinking best in about five.

2016 Demetria Grenache

Demetria Estate is located above Foxen Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA. The property consists of 213 acres of rolling hills with 38 high elevation hillside acres under vine. The vineyard was planted by Andrew Murray in phases from 1990 to 2000, exclusively to Rhone varietals, and has been farmed Biodynamically since its purchase by the Zahoudonis family in 2005.

Biodynamic viticulture stems from the ideas of Rudolf Steiner, and are based on his spiritual / practical philosophy which includes understanding the ecological, the energetic, and the spiritual in nature. This type of viticulture views the farm as a cohesive, interconnected living system.

There is some debate as to the efficacy of biodynamic farming and whether it is hocus pocus or a real spiritual connection with the land. Undoubtedly, the additional commitment to following the practices and preparations of biodynamics forces the grower to spend more time and attention tending their crops.

In keeping with the spirit of the biodynamic farming practices, to make this wine, we hand harvested the fruit, and left 100% of the whole clusters in the fermentation after stomping by foot. We let fermentation start spontaneously, and we footstomped 1 time / day during a very long extended maceration of about 50 days on skins. The wine was pressed directly to neutral French oak and aged for 20 months.

The result is exotic, floral and pretty with clove, red cherry, pomegranate, and herb aromas. The palate is plush and juicy cherry in the front with drying tannin, crushed red pepper, and a sturdy finish from all the stem contact.

2018 Debra

White Zin Saves Lives.

You see, Zinfandel was first planted around the turn of the century, and the planting of Zin boomed soon after, becoming the most widespread variety in California.  These old Zin vines are treasured now, but for a long time after Prohibition, and the Great Depression, the fruit from these OG vineyards was used in the cheapest, lowest quality wines, and the demand was so low that many growers began tearing them out...

Until the 1970’s when an accidentally stuck fermentation (that thing when the yeast dies before all the sugar is converted to alcohol) was bottled sweet.  That sugary nectar became an instant hit with grocery store consumers, and the popularity of White Zin gave those old vineyards a new lease on life and a new home for the fruit.  White Zine still accounts for 10%! Of US wine sales.

Debra is our homage to ‘White Zin’ - the most basic of blush for all you basic babies. Think ‘White Zin’, but dry and good. It’s named after Debra from the Beck song, who I imagine to be a big fan of the blush.

Debra is light, refreshing, and crisp. We only bottled 5 barrels of this wine that smells and tastes like strawberries, watermelon rind, dust and tangerine.

Whole clusters of Syrah are picked by hand into bins, rushed to the winery, and then dumped right into the tank. The whole mess goes in without being de-stemmed. We walk on the fruit to let some juice loose which naturally starts the fermentation. It's weird to think of fermenting with the whole bunches of grapes as an addition to the wine, but it's been pretty common practice in modern winemaking to completely remove the stems from the berries for fermentation. By including the stems in the wine, we see more perfume, complexity, spice, firmness, and age-iness.

Cabernet is the king of grapes. It’s also dad wine.

There is so much shapeless Cabernet in this world that it behooved us to try our hand at producing one with character and balance.  We aimed at the old school Cabernets of 1970s California.  Yes there is fruit and sunshine in the wine, but there is freshness, juiciness, a touch of green and plenty of vibrancy.

We sourced the fruit from a little ranch just to the west of where the Happy Canyon appellation boundary sits and harvested at the point when the tannins began to soften, but there was still loads of true Cabernet character.

2017 Make the Time Dark Red Wine

Regular price $34.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $49+

Relax with a dark red wine. Made from 60% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Alvarahao sourced and handpicked from three special vineyards in Santa Barbara County. This red blend encourages you to settle in and get comfortable.

This is our riff on the classic 'Dry Red' blend of Cab and Syrah that was pioneered in Australia. The Syrah this year is sourced from Tierra Alta Vineyard in Ballard Canyon. It’s rich and meaty... full of fleshy mid palate. The Cab is from leafy and herbal with firm tannin and currant-y acid.  There's a little bit of dark, floral Alvarahao (Portuguese grape) from Fess Parker's Rodney's Vineyard.

To make this wine, the Syrah and Cab lots are hand picked and harvested separately. In the winery, we completely de-stem the fruit and macerate on skins for 2 to 3 weeks. The wines are pressed to American Oak hogsheads (bigger barrels) that are actually coopered in Australia. The wine is aged for 20 months, Making the Time to soften and build complexity.

The result is a deeply concentrated wine full of meat, tar, vanilla bourbon-y char, crushed dark berries and licorice on the nose. The palate is rich, soft, and concentrated with blackberry, iron, and savoriness. The palate has concentrated flavor and a soft mouth feel, ripe with juicy mulberries, tart black currants, mocha, meat, and savory cedar flavors.

2018 Santa Barbara County Pinot Noir

Our Pinot Noir is a made from some of Santa Barbara County’s great cool climate Pinot Noir vineyards. It’s a selection of barrels from Sanford & Benedict, Rio Vista, Riverbench, and Kick On Ranch. All the vineyard lots were fermented separately with as much as 100% whole clusters in a couple of the lots, to build in a little extra tannin and complexity.

The wine is crazy clear, pure, fresh and drinkable. It’s full of clean red fruits - loads of strawberries, raspberries, red currants, cherries and complex herby notes. Aromatically, there's heaps of dried herbs and bay leaves. The palate has ocean breeze acidity and great energy to ride along with its medium weight red fruits.

2015 Mormann Syrah

Regular price $55.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $49+
/

Mormann Vineyard is an under-the-radar ranch in the north-west corner of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, whose neighbors include Clos Pepe, Machado, Hilliard Bruce, and Kessler Hawk.  The vineyard was first planted in 1999 and 2001 and operated for years as the Rozak Ranch Vineyard before changing hands.

The vines are grown on what is essentially a beach sand dune that is incredibly nutrient deficient with great drainage.  This means that overly vigorous canopy is never a problem, and the yields are always low and concentrated.  The vines struggle in this cool wind swept area which produces wines with beautiful natural acidity and bright, pure fruit flavors.

This bottling was made by hand-picking two different clones of Syrah at the end of the season.  The fruit was harvested in October still with plenty of fresh acidity.  We crushed both clones into the same tank and left 50% of the clusters whole in the fermentation.  The ripe stems add tannin structure and incredible savory characters.

A cooler-climate array of aromas and flavors comes through in the 2015 Syrah Mormann. Game, black pepper, black olive, lavender and blueberry jam are all amped up in this decidedly intense Syrah. The 50% whole clusters work nicely to build structure and temper some of the wine’s flamboyance.. The 2015 was fermented with 50% whole clusters and spent 20 months in neutral oak with no racking prior to bottling.

2015 Tierra Alta Grenache

Tierra Alta Vineyard is a dramatically steep site that is full of chalky white limestone. It’s because of this soil profile that these wines always carry a strong streak
of minerality.

The wide variation between the tops and bottoms of the slopes contribute to the energy in the wine. Richness and power from lean soils at the top of the hill; juiciness, and freshness from the heavier solids at the bottoms. This dynamism also plays out in the micro-climate of
the area.

Tierra Alta is perched at the northern end of Ballard Canyon. The fog pushes and pulls against it almost every day during the growing season - filling up the canyon in the morning and emptying out in the evening.  Ballard Canyon is a cooler part of the Santa Ynez Valley and as a result produces wines that show more fresh and savory flavors from that spectrum.

To make this wine, we hand harvested the fruit, and left about 25% of the whole clusters in the fermentation-  the rest was destemmed. After crushing and foot stomping the fruit, we let the wine naturally begin fermentation with ambient yeast. We pumped over the must 1 time / day and pressed after an extended maceration of about 30 days on skins. The wine was aged in neutral French oak and wasn’t racked until bottling. We bottled 55 cases of this wine - unfined, and unfiltered, in July of 2017.

The result is a beautiful cranberry-garnet colored wine that shows the fresh berry side of Grenache.  Red cherries, cranberries, plums, spices, and new leather explode from the glass in a wine built on brightness.  The inclusion of 25% whole clusters gives some savory balance to the wine’s red fruit.

Bien Nacido is one of the greatest and most storied vineyards in America. The combination of the terroir of Bien Nacido Vineyards, the diligence of the people who manage it, and the close relationships they have developed with so many of the producers in our local wine industry are the components of what make it so special.

The vineyard sits in the Santa Maria Valley which is heavily influenced by the nearby Pacific Ocean.  Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah have found great expression here as the cool climate bestows fresh acidity, minerality, and delicious savoriness.  Our ‘W’ Block of Chardonnay was planted in the 1970s and is farmed organically today.

This bottling of Chardonnay was made by hand-picking at very low sugars and high acids. The fruit was whole-bunch pressed and the juice was sent straight to neutral French oak barrels for fermentation which was started spontaneously.

We aged the wine for eight months in barrel while stirring lees about once a month to help build texture and weight.  The wine has also partially completed malolactic fermentation.

The resulting Chardonnay is supple, and textured throughout with lemon cream, pear, spice, and mineral aromas and flavors.  The acidity is zippy and fresh, with texture and weight provided by the barrel aging and battonage.  The wine finishes fresh and long with lemon, mineral, and toasty flavors.
