Counoise is a black grape grown primarily in the Rhone Valley of France that is typically used as a blending grape. It is one of the more rarified varietals in red Chateauneuf du Pape, and while varietal southern French versions are made, Counoise is not widely grown outside of the region. As a vine, it leaves and ripens late and yields conservatively. As a wine, it is not deeply colored or alcoholic but adds lift, a peppery note, and lively acidity to a blend.

Our grapes were sourced from a coolish mesa in Santa Barbara County-Rodney’s Vineyard. This wine was made by hand-picking the grapes, and then fermenting them on skins for about 10 days. We matured in neutral old French oak barrels. It was racked once. This wine is approachable upon release and should be in its prime over the next 3 years.
