The 2019 Rodney’s Vineyard Syrah is a deeply personal wine, drawing from my years of experience working at Fess Parker and the special connection I have with this vineyard. Rodney’s Vineyard is a standout site in the Santa Ynez Valley, with its unique combination of sandy loam soils and cool microclimate, allowing Syrah to ripen slowly and develop complex flavors.

The 2019 vintage in Santa Barbara County was marked by a long, cool growing season, which allowed for extended hang time and the development of intricate, balanced flavors. A late spring and a mild summer led to a harvest that began later than the previous drought years before ‘18, ensuring that the fruit reached optimal ripeness without losing its natural acidity.

In the glass, this wine offers a deep, inky purple hue. The nose is immediately greeted by rich aromas of blackberry, black currant, and ripe plum, intertwined with notes of black pepper, smoked meat, and a subtle hint of violets. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and velvety, with layers of rich dark fruit flavors, such as boysenberry and black cherry, dark chocolate, espresso, and a touch of earthiness that speaks to the vineyard’s terroir.

The tannins are structured yet well-integrated, providing a solid structure that promises longevity. The finish is long and lingering, with a beautiful balance of fruit, spice, and savory elements. We’ve matured the wine for 5 years before release, and it’s in a prime drinking window right now. Enjoy it with grilled lamb or a hearty stew, or cellar it for a few more years to watch it evolve.
