Syrah

California Syrah, from some of the coolest Syrah-growing climate in the state. Santa Barbara County Syrah — particularly from the Ballard Canyon and Sta. Rita Hills AVAs — occupies a specific place in the world: not Rhône, not Barossa, not Sonoma. Cool enough for savory, peppery, meaty expression. Warm enough to ripen without stripping acid.

These aren't the dense, oaky, fruit-forward Syrahs that dominated California in the 2000s. Our Syrahs are made for the table — medium-weight, food-first, with the black-fruit/olive/pepper spectrum that made Syrah famous in the Northern Rhône. Whole-cluster fermentation on select lots. Native yeast. Minimal sulfur additions. Neutral oak weighted over new.

Every bottle on this page is small-production — sometimes under 100 cases — and shippable direct to most US states. Club members get first-access pricing and skip the public release window.

Pairing suggestions, in short: grilled lamb, braised short rib, charcuterie with olives, anything with a char on it. Decant for 30 minutes if the bottle is young. These Syrahs reward a little air.

If you've only had Napa Syrah or big Australian Shiraz, the Santa Barbara expression will read almost like a different grape. That's the point. Start with the entry-tier Muni Syrah to calibrate; step up to Potek's single-vineyard bottlings if you want to taste site specificity.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Syrah and Shiraz? Same grape, different stylistic signals. "Syrah" usually signals a Rhône-leaning, savory, cool-climate style. "Shiraz" usually signals the warm, fruit-forward Australian approach. Ours are Syrah by both name and style.

How long can I cellar California Syrah? Our Syrahs drink well on release and typically hold 5-10 years for premium single-vineyard bottlings. Cooler vintages can age longer.

What food pairs best with Santa Barbara Syrah? Grilled red meat, lamb, mushrooms, hard cheese, game. The savory/peppery side of the wine loves char and fat.

Is Syrah shippable to my state? We ship to most US states; the cart will confirm at checkout.
