2022 Bien Nacido Syrah

Bien Nacido is one of the most iconic and storied vineyards in America. Its unique terroir, the dedication of its caretakers, and the strong relationships they’ve built with local producers make Bien Nacido truly exceptional.

Located in the Santa Maria Valley, the vineyard benefits from the cooling influence of the nearby Pacific Ocean. This cool climate fosters vibrant expressions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Syrah, imparting fresh acidity, minerality, and savory complexity. Our vineyard block features just under one acre of organically farmed Estrella clone Syrah.

For this bottling, the Syrah was hand-picked late in the season. Despite the extended hang time, the cool climate kept sugar levels low. The fruit was mostly destemmed, with about 15% whole clusters included in the fermentation.

The wine was aged for eighteen months in neutral French oak barrels, allowing its flavors to harmonize without overpowering the fruit.

The resulting Syrah is among the finest we’ve produced. It boasts long, fine tannins, juicy and fresh acidity, and a medium-bodied profile. Flavors of olive, earth, and sage intertwine with juicy black fruits, offering a savory and balanced wine that speaks to the unique character of Bien Nacido.
