Fox Family Vineyard is a tiny, organically farmed, five-acre ranch on a south-facing, rocky hillside in Los Olivos. The vineyard is entirely hand-farmed, including hand hoeing under vines and applying sprays with a backpack.
Blair Fox, who I worked with at Fess Parker, helped his parents plant the vineyard and continues to farm it organically with John Belfy of Buona Terra Farming. Blair is also the only other producer crafting Grenache from this exceptional vineyard.
The vineyard’s cool-ish climate and excellent drainage produce intense, concentrated fruit. While the tannins are firm and structured in youth, they enable the wine to age gracefully over time. The aromatics are exotic and spicy, with a floral and pure character.
To make this wine, we hand-harvested the fruit and left 25% as whole clusters in the fermentation after stomping by foot. Following a three-day cold soak, we allowed the wine to warm naturally, and fermentation began spontaneously. We punched down twice daily and pressed after an extended maceration of about 30 days on the skins. The wine was aged in 50% new and 50% neutral French oak puncheons and was not racked until bottling.
The result is a medium to full-bodied beauty with tons of Grenache charm and texture. The 2010 vintage showcases notes of spice box, mulled red and black fruits, dried earth, and pepper.
