Municipal Winemakers to Open Tasting Room in SANTA BARBARA Funk Zone

(most likely to be the best tasting room… ever)

Grand Opening celebration February 20th 2 – 6 pm

28 Anacapa Street

Santa Barbara

The Municipal Winemakers will open a tasting room in the Funk Zone of Santa Barbara, making them the eleventh and newest winery to join the Santa Barbara Urban Wine Trail. Each new producer has added flavor to the Urban Wine Trail, which is gaining popularity with locals and tourists alike as a premium wine tasting destination.

The cozy new tasting room is set quietly off the street towards the back of the same building that houses the Kunin/Westerly tasting room at 28 Anacapa Street, just a couple hundred yards from the beach. Visitors who discover it are rewarded with a rich tasting experience – a full immersion into the Muniverse where wine is demystified through friendliness and education.

Industrial machinery, old office furniture and found objects have been repurposed and recycled as functional design. Highlights include: tables with community seating for sharing the wine experience, and an outdoor patio to enjoy the sunny Santa Barbara weekends. The best part, however, is the lineup of reasonably priced delicious wines that represent some of the best values in Santa Barbara County.

Municipal Winemakers challenge the traditional idea that fine wine is of privilege. They work hard to reconcile the reality that wine is a social beverage by taking a light-hearted approach to its presentation. Wine Spectator has remarked, “Municipal Winemakers takes all possible pretense out of labeling wine.” All the while, Muni remains seriously meticulous about the craft of winemaking.

Current releases include the crisp, fresh and minerally dry Riesling called Bright White, while the Bright Red is a spicy, savory Cotes du Rhone inspired blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah. Their latest release is the fun and bubbly FIZZ sparkling Shiraz.

Municipal Winemakers is a small production winery that has been producing honest wines since 2007. The philosophy is to craft small-lot, highest quality wines by sourcing grapes from special vineyards in Santa Barbara County and drawing on winemaking experiences in Australia, France, and California. Muni Wines balance old-world personality and elegance with the vibrancy and intensity of modern wine styles.

Muni is owned and operated by one person, David Potter, who is also a member of the winemaking team at Fess Parker Winery and Epiphany Cellars.

The Grand Opening celebration on February 20th will run from 2 to 6 pm. The event will feature a selection of gourmet goods from Whole Foods market.

The Regal Seal – A Crown Cap

by dave on January 12, 2010

We made the decision to finish our FIZZ sparkling shiraz with a crown seal.  Wanna know why???

Read the whole article and interview with Jesse Porter from the Young Winos of LA here.

The interview part is copied and pasted below…

YW: Why did you choose to use an artificial closure for your first vintage of sparkling wine?  Isn’t it more fun to pop open a cork?

DP: Popping the cork is fun, but so is popping a cap – at least I think so.  At any rate, it’s the drinking of the wine part that is the most fun, and it’s the wine in the bottle that I am most interested in.  Besides, I don’t use corks on any of my other wines because I feel that they do not perform as well as the Stelvin screwcap.  Nothing bums me out more than spending good money on a bottle of wine that the cork has spoiled.  The crown seal is, in my opinion, a better closure than the cork as well.

901_0167.jpgYW: Why the crown cap?  Why not one of those hard plastic artificial corks?

DP: The crown cap is actually a great closure!  It’s what most Champagne houses use duringtirage when the wine is undergoing secondary fermentation in the bottle, as well as aging on thelees.  Most Champagne houses (Vueve, Dom, etc.) have their caves full of wines that age with a crown cap for years at a time.  It holds the pressure in very well, forms a great seal, and will not contaminate the wine like a cork could. Besides, plastic corks suck.

HELP! We Need a New Name

by dave on November 3, 2009

promo1.026

Apparently, you are supposed to check trademarks before you release new products…  Another winery makes a sweet wine called ‘Sweetie’.  Honest mistake, we are sorry for the mixup, but we can’t use that name anymore, and need a new one.

Head over to our facebook page, and leave a suggestion on our wall if you have any great ideas.

promo.023

David Wilson has a great radio show called ‘Grape Encounters’ where he tips people off to “special discoveries and memorable experiences” in the Santa Ynez Valley.  Last weekend, he interviewed me on his show.  He is a pro.  I just tried to keep up.

My interview starts at the 10:00 minute mark.
