The Santa Ynez Valley’s unusual orientation pulls maritime wind inland across the extended Santa Ynez Valley every afternoon + fog every evening. The vineyard is divided into blocks by soil profile, rootstock, and clone. The vines are very densely planted at 2420 vines \/ acre. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWe started working with Hilliard Bruce when Greg Brewer, a respected colleague and friend, took over the farming operation. We’ve been very pleased with the result of the meticulous farming and special site of the vineyard. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eOur Chardonnay was produced by hand picking low brix fruit at night, and rushing it straight to our press in the morning. The fruit was pressed whole cluster directly to old French oak. The juice was allowed to begin fermentation on its own with ambient yeasts. The wine was aged in barrel for nine months with lees stirring performed once a month to build texture and increase mouthfeel. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe resulting wine is high energy with precise and vivid acidity resulting from the sandy soils and cool foggy ocean breezes. Kimsey is densely planted, meticulously farmed, and is quickly proving to be a very special growing site in Ballard Canyon.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Apple-tab-span\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eOur fruit comes from the Alban clone Grenache block.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eThis wine was made with hand-picked fruit that was 75% de-stemmed and fermented in an open top tank.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eWe aged in 50% new and 50% older French oak puncheons for 18 months and bottled the wine unfined and unfiltered.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003e\u003cspan class=\"Apple-tab-span\"\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ePungent red stone fruits, herbs, smoke, licorice and leather hit the nose and palate with considerable intensity and power. The 50% new French oak barrels are completely integrated. This is a Grenache bottling of real character and personality.\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003eThe 2015 is also going to need time to soften a bit, but it is immensely promising. Kimsey is a very young site. Needless to say, it is going to be very interesting to see how things develop in coming vintages.
