HOFER - Cucamonga Grenache

Hofer Ranch is a special oasis that's about 45 miles to the east of LA. It's a Grenache-planted beach sand, own-rooted, head-trained vineyard that's been farmed organically since it was planted in the 1915. After prohibition, the ranch grew to 900 acres, and it sent fruit across the country in boxcars. All that remains today is 5 acres of sand wedged next to the Ontario airport & a field of industrial warehouses. The wine is punchy (like it looks and tastes like Hawaiian Punch), funky, & has loads of sun-kissed, juicy cherry fruit. Put a chill on it for extra fun.

Punchy and crunchy

This wine is delightful! It’s like biting into a juicy, cold red grape. I love taking a chilled bottle on a picnic. Definitely my favorite Summer 2020 wine.

Sparkling Shiraz is a treat!

We make this wine by barrel aging a rich, ripe syrah for about 20 months in French oak.  The Syrah is made from some of our favorite ranches around the county, mostly Ballard Canyon.

After aging, the wine is racked to a tank at the brewery next door and force carbonated.  Just prior to bottling, we added a small amount of sugar and yeast.  A secondary fermentation in the bottle took place and the wine was conditioned in the bottle for about 3 months.

The wine is fizzy black, with a magenta mousse.  Aromas of black currants, black berries, chocolate, cherries, and strawberries jump right on out of that glass and tickle the nose.

Head's up!  This is a 500 mL bottle.

2017 Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir

2017 Sanford & Benedict Pinot Noir

Making wine from Sanford & Benedict is a privilege. The fruit for this wine is from the original 1971 own-rooted plantings, the genesis of Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir. This vineyard has been tended from the start with love and care, resulting in vines that produce wines of amazing complexity and striking purity.

2017 was an early, warm vintage with a generous crop, but the wines in general have such a harmony of both crispy fresh acid and generous, juicy fruit.

This is a taught, crunchy pinot that shows its cool climate near the ocean on Santa Rosa Road. This wine has an energy and life that is hard to describe, and even harder to find; it is the result of the confluence of a special site, vine age, and a kind vintage.

Our 2017 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict is energetic, lean and expressively aromatic.  It captures the essence of S&B.  Mid-weight and nicely perfumed, the 2017 S&B is a pretty wine to drink now and over the next few years.

In this vintage we included about one third of the whole cluster fruit in the fermentation because we had beautiful stems at harvest.

We bottled 54 unfined cases of this wine in April 2019 after 18 months in neutral and 2-year-old French Oak.

2016 Tierra Alta Syrah

Regular price $47.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $79+
/

Tierra Alta Vineyard is a dramatically steep site that is full of chalky white limestone. The limestone adds beneficial nutrients to the vines but also holds some moisture in the dryer times and offers good drainage when it rains.

The wide variation between the tops and bottoms of the slopes contribute to the energy in the wine. Richness and power from lean soils at the top of the hill; juiciness, and freshness from the heavier solids at the bottoms. This dynamism also plays out in the micro-climate of the area.

Tierra Alta is perched at the northern end of Ballard Canyon. The fog pushes and pulls against it almost every day during the growing season - filling up the canyon in the morning and emptying out in the evening.  Ballard Canyon has carved a niche among the world’s greatest Syrah producing regions. The Syrahs rest in the middle of the grape’s stylistic range, richly textured, while maintaining vibrancy and freshness.

Tierra Alta has been the backbone of my Syrah program since my start in 2007. Every year I have refined my approach to the different blocks and clones. I’ve tinkered with various percentages of stem inclusion, harvest ripeness and fermentation regime.

The 2016 Tierra Alta Syrah is a wine that is powerful and explosive but always in balance. The nose is an explosion of dark fruit, game, and savory notes. The flavors are classic syrah with dark berry, smoke, iron, olive, black pepper and minty note on the finish. The tannins are present but not overpowering and will integrate over the next few years. This wine will last 10+ years and will be drinking best in about five.

2016 Demetria Grenache

Demetria Estate is located above Foxen Canyon in the Santa Ynez Valley AVA. The property consists of 213 acres of rolling hills with 38 high elevation hillside acres under vine. The vineyard was planted by Andrew Murray in phases from 1990 to 2000, exclusively to Rhone varietals, and has been farmed Biodynamically since its purchase by the Zahoudonis family in 2005.

Biodynamic viticulture stems from the ideas of Rudolf Steiner, and are based on his spiritual / practical philosophy which includes understanding the ecological, the energetic, and the spiritual in nature. This type of viticulture views the farm as a cohesive, interconnected living system.

There is some debate as to the efficacy of biodynamic farming and whether it is hocus pocus or a real spiritual connection with the land. Undoubtedly, the additional commitment to following the practices and preparations of biodynamics forces the grower to spend more time and attention tending their crops.

In keeping with the spirit of the biodynamic farming practices, to make this wine, we hand harvested the fruit, and left 100% of the whole clusters in the fermentation after stomping by foot. We let fermentation start spontaneously, and we footstomped 1 time / day during a very long extended maceration of about 50 days on skins. The wine was pressed directly to neutral French oak and aged for 20 months.

The result is exotic, floral and pretty with clove, red cherry, pomegranate, and herb aromas. The palate is plush and juicy cherry in the front with drying tannin, crushed red pepper, and a sturdy finish from all the stem contact.

2017 The Whole Mess Syrah

Whole clusters of Syrah are picked by hand into bins, rushed to the winery, and then dumped right into the tank. The whole mess goes in without being de-stemmed. We walk on the fruit to let some juice loose which naturally starts the fermentation. It's weird to think of fermenting with the whole bunches of grapes as an addition to the wine, but it's been pretty common practice in modern winemaking to completely remove the stems from the berries for fermentation. By including the stems in the wine, we see more perfume, complexity, spice, firmness, and age-iness.

2017 Make the Time Dark Red Wine

Regular price $34.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $79+
/

Relax with a dark red wine. Made from 60% Syrah, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Alvarahao sourced and handpicked from three special vineyards in Santa Barbara County. This red blend encourages you to settle in and get comfortable.

This is our riff on the classic 'Dry Red' blend of Cab and Syrah that was pioneered in Australia. The Syrah this year is sourced from Tierra Alta Vineyard in Ballard Canyon. It’s rich and meaty... full of fleshy mid palate. The Cab is from leafy and herbal with firm tannin and currant-y acid.  There's a little bit of dark, floral Alvarahao (Portuguese grape) from Fess Parker's Rodney's Vineyard.

To make this wine, the Syrah and Cab lots are hand picked and harvested separately. In the winery, we completely de-stem the fruit and macerate on skins for 2 to 3 weeks. The wines are pressed to American Oak hogsheads (bigger barrels) that are actually coopered in Australia. The wine is aged for 20 months, Making the Time to soften and build complexity.

The result is a deeply concentrated wine full of meat, tar, vanilla bourbon-y char, crushed dark berries and licorice on the nose. The palate is rich, soft, and concentrated with blackberry, iron, and savoriness. The palate has concentrated flavor and a soft mouth feel, ripe with juicy mulberries, tart black currants, mocha, meat, and savory cedar flavors.

Inventory on the way

Our Pinot Noir is a made from some of Santa Barbara County’s great cool climate Pinot Noir vineyards. It’s a selection of barrels from Sanford & Benedict, Rio Vista, Riverbench, and Kick On Ranch. All the vineyard lots were fermented separately with as much as 100% whole clusters in a couple of the lots, to build in a little extra tannin and complexity.

The wine is crazy clear, pure, fresh and drinkable. It’s full of clean red fruits - loads of strawberries, raspberries, red currants, cherries and complex herby notes. Aromatically, there's heaps of dried herbs and bay leaves. The palate has ocean breeze acidity and great energy to ride along with its medium weight red fruits.

2015 Mormann Syrah

2015 Mormann Syrah

Regular price $55.00 Free Local Delivery + Free Shipping on orders $79+
/

Mormann Vineyard is an under-the-radar ranch in the north-west corner of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA, whose neighbors include Clos Pepe, Machado, Hilliard Bruce, and Kessler Hawk.  The vineyard was first planted in 1999 and 2001 and operated for years as the Rozak Ranch Vineyard before changing hands.

The vines are grown on what is essentially a beach sand dune that is incredibly nutrient deficient with great drainage.  This means that overly vigorous canopy is never a problem, and the yields are always low and concentrated.  The vines struggle in this cool wind swept area which produces wines with beautiful natural acidity and bright, pure fruit flavors.

This bottling was made by hand-picking two different clones of Syrah at the end of the season.  The fruit was harvested in October still with plenty of fresh acidity.  We crushed both clones into the same tank and left 50% of the clusters whole in the fermentation.  The ripe stems add tannin structure and incredible savory characters.

A cooler-climate array of aromas and flavors comes through in the 2015 Syrah Mormann. Game, black pepper, black olive, lavender and blueberry jam are all amped up in this decidedly intense Syrah. The 50% whole clusters work nicely to build structure and temper some of the wine’s flamboyance.. The 2015 was fermented with 50% whole clusters and spent 20 months in neutral oak with no racking prior to bottling.

2015 Tierra Alta Grenache

Tierra Alta Vineyard is a dramatically steep site that is full of chalky white limestone. It’s because of this soil profile that these wines always carry a strong streak
of minerality.

The wide variation between the tops and bottoms of the slopes contribute to the energy in the wine. Richness and power from lean soils at the top of the hill; juiciness, and freshness from the heavier solids at the bottoms. This dynamism also plays out in the micro-climate of
the area.

Tierra Alta is perched at the northern end of Ballard Canyon. The fog pushes and pulls against it almost every day during the growing season - filling up the canyon in the morning and emptying out in the evening.  Ballard Canyon is a cooler part of the Santa Ynez Valley and as a result produces wines that show more fresh and savory flavors from that spectrum.

To make this wine, we hand harvested the fruit, and left about 25% of the whole clusters in the fermentation-  the rest was destemmed. After crushing and foot stomping the fruit, we let the wine naturally begin fermentation with ambient yeast. We pumped over the must 1 time / day and pressed after an extended maceration of about 30 days on skins. The wine was aged in neutral French oak and wasn’t racked until bottling. We bottled 55 cases of this wine - unfined, and unfiltered, in July of 2017.

The result is a beautiful cranberry-garnet colored wine that shows the fresh berry side of Grenache.  Red cherries, cranberries, plums, spices, and new leather explode from the glass in a wine built on brightness.  The inclusion of 25% whole clusters gives some savory balance to the wine’s red fruit.
